Seal Replacement Recommendations

Lip seals seal the rotating shafts. The lip seals require special treatment. Lip seals are used on the steering gear in the following locations:
- At the pinion shaft
- On the pump drive shaft

When a leak occurs in these areas, perform the following steps:
1. Inspect the sealing surface.
2. Clean the sealing surface.
3. Replace the seal.

If corrosion in the lip seal contact zone is slight, clean the surface of the shaft using a crocus cloth. Replace the shaft only under the following conditions:
- You find such severe pitting that cleaning the shaft will not stop the leak
- Unit Repair procedures indicate that the shaft is replaceable
