Instrument Panel Support
SUPPORT-INSTRUMENT PANELNOTE: LHD model shown in the following illustrations. RHD model similar.
REMOVAL
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
NOTE: LHD model shown in the following illustrations. RHD model similar.
1. Remove the instrument panel assembly from the vehicle and place it on a workbench.
2. Remove the radio.
3. Remove the two instrument panel speakers.
4. Using a trim stick C-4755 or equivalent (2), disengage the snap retainers that secure the two grab handle covers (1) to the grab handle (3) located below the passenger side airbag (4) and remove the covers.
5. Remove the two bolts (5) that secure the grab handle to the grab handle base (6) and remove the handle.
6. Remove the passenger side airbag.
7. Remove the four screws (1) that secure the grab handle base (2) to the instrument panel support (3) and remove the base.
8. Remove the two bolts (4) that secure the glove box damper (5) to the instrument panel support and remove the damper.
9. Reach through the opening in the center of the instrument panel (1) and disengage the center duct (2) from the air distribution duct (3).
10. Rotate and tilt the center duct as necessary to remove it from the instrument panel.
11. Using a trim stick C-4755 or equivalent (1), remove the cluster bezel (2) from the instrument panel (3) by releasing the snap retainers from the instrument panel.
12. Remove the instrument cluster.
13. Remove the driver side knee airbag.
14. Disconnect the right demister duct (1) and the left demister duct (3) from the defroster duct (4).
15. Remove the four screws (2) that secure the defroster duct to the instrument panel and remove the duct.
NOTE: Driver side demister duct shown in illustration. Passenger side demister duct similar.
16. Remove the four screws (1) that secure each demister duct (2) to top the instrument panel (3).
17. Disconnect the demister ducts from the defroster duct (4) and remove the demister ducts.
18. Disconnect the wire harness connector (1) from the remote compass module (2) located on the top of the instrument panel (3).
19. Remove the two screws (4) that secure the remote compass module to the instrument panel and remove the module.
20. Disengage any wire harness retainers that secure the instrument panel wire harness (1) to the instrument panel support cover (2) and position the wire harness out of the way.
21. Remove the 31 screws (3) that secure the instrument panel support cover to the instrument panel support (4) and remove the cover.
22. If required, remove the six screws (1) that secure the air distribution duct (2) to the instrument panel cover (3) and remove the duct.
NOTE: To aid in reinstallation, note the installed locations of the instrument panel wire harness connectors prior to removal of the harness.
23. Disengage any wire harness retainers that secure the instrument panel wire harness (1) to the instrument panel support (2) and remove the wire harness.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the instrument panel wire harness (1) onto the instrument panel support (2) and engage the wire harness retainers to the support.
2. If removed, position the air distribution duct (2) into the back of the instrument panel cover (3).
3. Install the six screws (1) that secure the air distribution duct to the instrument panel cover. Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.).
4. Install the instrument panel support cover (2) onto the instrument panel support (4).
5. Install the 31 screws (3) that secure the instrument panel support cover to the instrument panel support. Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.).
6. Position the instrument panel wire harness (1) to the instrument panel support cover and engage the wire harness retainers to the cover.
7. Position the remote compass module (2) onto the top of the instrument panel (3).
8. Install the two screws (4) that secure the remote compass module to the instrument panel. Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.).
9. Connect the wire harness connector (1) to the remote compass module.
NOTE: Driver side demister duct shown in illustration. Passenger side demister duct similar.
10. Position each demister duct (2) to the top of the instrument panel (3).
11. Install the four screws (1) that secure each demister duct to the instrument panel. Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.).
12. Position the defroster duct (4) to the back of the instrument panel.
13. Install the four screws (2) that secure the defroster duct to the instrument panel. Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.).
14. Connect the right demister duct (1) and the left demister duct (3) to the defroster duct.
15. Install the driver side knee airbag.
16. Install the instrument cluster.
17. Install the cluster bezel (1) onto the instrument panel (2). Make sure the snap retainers are fully engaged to the instrument panel.
18. Position the center duct (2) into the opening in the instrument panel (1). Rotate and tilt the duct as necessary.
19. Connect the center duct to the air distribution duct (3).
20. Position the glove box damper (5) onto the instrument panel support (3).
21. Install the two screws (4) that secure the glove box damper to the instrument panel support. Tighten the screws to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.).
22. Position the grab handle base (2) onto the instrument panel support.
23. Install the four screws (1) that secure the grab handle base to the instrument panel support. Tighten the screws to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.).
24. Install the passenger side airbag and cover (4).
25. Position the grab handle (3) onto the grab handle base (6).
26. Install the two screws (5) that secure the grab handle to the grab handle bass. Tighten the screws to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.).
27. Install the two grab handle covers (1) onto the grab handle. Make sure the snap retainers are fully engaged to the grab handle.
28. Install the two instrument panel speakers.
29. Install the radio.
30. Install the instrument panel assembly.
