Disassembly

G288 MANUAL TRANSAXLE

DISASSEMBLY





1. Using Puller/Slide Hammer C-3752 Remover 8870, (1, 2) remove four (4) shift rod detent plugs (3).





2. Remove clutch slave cylinder (1).





3. Remove reverse gear lock-out plug (1), spring (2), and pin (3). Use magnet to remove pin from transaxle.





4. Remove shift shaft detent assembly (1).





5. Remove backup lamp switch (1).





6. Remove shift shaft assembly by gently prying between mechanism and case using a suitable screwdriver.





7. Remove end cover-to-case bolts (2).





8. Using a soft tipped hammer (2), break end cover to-case seal and remove end cover (1).





9. Remove and inspect plastic oil diverters (1).





10. Using suitable screwdriver (2), place transaxle into fifth..





11. ..AND reverse gears (1). This locks up geartrain and facilitates removal of bearing retaining screws.





12. Remove input and output shaft bearing retainer screws (1).





13. Remove the short (1) geartrain housing-to-clutch bellhousing bolts.





14. Remove the long (1) geartrain housing-to-clutch bellhousing bolts.
15. Using a soft tipped hammer, tap clutch bellhousing to break loose and remove from geartrain housing. Reverse shaft and fork/rail assembly will remain with the clutch bellhousing.
16. Using a suitable prybar(s), separate reverse shaft assembly from clutch bellhousing.
17. Remove differential assembly from transaxle housing.





18. Place Fixture 8869-2 (1) into input and output shafts at rear of case. Set transaxle and tool on press bed.





19. Set Fixture 8869-1 (1) across case flange. Fixture 8869-1 to remove input shaft, output shaft, and fork/rail assemblies from case.





20. Remove input shaft oil trough (1).





21. Remove output shaft oil trough (1).
