4WD/ AWD Models

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Drain brake fluid into a suitable container.
3. Drain differential fluid into a suitable container.
4. Remove brake drum and disconnect rear brake assembly tube.
5. Remove rear brake shoe assembly as outlined under the brake section.
6. Disconnect parking brake cable.
7. Pull out axle shaft from housing using axle shaft puller tool No. CTR-1003 or equivalent, and a slide hammer.
8. Remove shim, packing and oil seal.
9. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Apply grease to oil seal then install oil seal using oil seal installer tool Nos. MB990938 and MB990935 or equivalent.
b. Adjust outer bearing retainer interference, refer to, Transmission and Drivetrain/Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints/Axle Bearings/Adjustments.
