A/T- 47RE Harsh Or Early Shifts: Overview
NUMBER: 21-14-99GROUP: Transmission
DATE: Nov. 5, 1999
SUBJECT:
47RE Transmission - Harsh Or Early Shifts
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Cummins CM551 Engine Control Module (ECM) with new software (calibration change OOCal57T9A). There is no change to the JTEC PCM software.
MODELS:
2000 (BR/BE) Ram Truck
NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 5.9L - 24V DIESEL ENGINE AND 47RE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BUILT BEFORE ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER 56624822 WITH A DATE OF MANUFACTURE OF AUGUST 28, 1999. THIS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON THE ENGINE DATA PLATE, WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE, AFFIXED TO THE GEAR HOUSING.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some early built 2000 model year Ram Trucks may experience a harsh 3-4 shift. This condition may occur during any throttle position situation when transmission sump temperatures are 15°C (60°F) or higher. The harsh 3-4 shift may be more pronounced during heavy vehicle loading, e.g. trailer towing.
Some 2000 M.Y vehicles may also experience an early 1-2 or 2-3 shift condition during wide open throttle (WOT) situations. This condition may have an impact on vehicle performance (acceleration). This condition may occur when transmission sump temperatures are 0°C (32°F) or higher.
Changes to the Cummins CM551 engine control module (ECM) software/calibration corrects the above two conditions.
NOTE:
ALL APPLICABLE VEHICLES BROUGHT IN FOR ANY MAINTENANCE MUST HAVE THIS FLASH PROCEDURE PERFORMED.
DIAGNOSIS:
Drive the vehicle in a safe area and manner. With the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRB III) connected to the vehicle, perform five (5) vehicle accelerations at wide open throttle.
Determine the engine rpm when the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts occur.
NOTE:
DO NOT USE THE VEHICLE TACHOMETER TO DETERMINE ENGINE RPM AT TIME OF SHIFT.
If the engine speed is less than 3,000 rpm during the 1-2 or 2-3 shift, or if there is a complaint of a harsh 3-4 shift, then continue with the following Diagnosis. Verify that the transmission throttle valve cable is adjusted properly.
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS2) and or the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRB III) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin. If no DTC's are present, and the above symptoms have been experienced, perform the Repair Procedure.
NOTE:
WHENEVER AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) IS REPLACED DUE TO FAILURE, THE SOFTWARE OF THE REPLACEMENT CONTROLLER MUST BE VERIFIED FOR THE LATEST REVISION LEVEL. USE THE FLASH PROCEDURE TO UPDATE REPLACED CONTROLLERS AS NECESSARY.
