The camshaft (Fig. 4) is made of selectively austempered ductile iron. The camshaft is supported by six journals directly in the aluminum cylinder block. A thrust plate (Fig. 4) is located in front of the first bearing journal, and is bolted to the block. This plate controls camshaft end play.
A dual-roller chain drives the camshaft. A cast aluminum cover encloses the chain. The cover holds the front crankshaft seal and the oil pump, provides the front oil pan closure, and provides oil filter and water pump mountings.
