REAR AXLE - 8 1/4

REMOVAL





1. With vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
2. Position a lift under axle and secure lift to axle.
3. Remove brake components from the axle.
4. Remove ABS wheel speed sensors.
5. Remove vent hose from the axle shaft tube.
6. Mark a reference line (3) across the propeller shaft (2) and pinion flange (1) for installation alignment.





7. Remove propeller shaft.
8. Remove stabilizer bar (2) clamps bolts (1) from the axle.





9. Remove watts link bell crank bolt (2) from differential cover (1).





10. Remove shock absorbers (2) from axle bracket (3).





11. Remove upper control arms (2) from axle brackets (1).





12. Lower axle and remove coil springs and spring isolators.
13. Remove lower control arms (2) from axle brackets (3).
14. Lower axle and remove from vehicle.

INSTALLATION





1. Raise axle and align lower control arms. Install control arm bolts loose at this time.
2. Install coil springs.
3. Raise axle and align upper control arms. Install control arm bolts loose at this time.

Note: Bell crank bolt has a Lactates patch, a new bolt should be used. If bolt is not available, clean bolt and apply Lactated 242 to the threads.

4. Install watts link bell crank bolt (2) and tighten to 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.).





5. Install shock absorbers and tighten nuts to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.).
6. Install parking brake and brake components.
7. Install axle vent hose.
8. Install stabilizer bar (2) and center it with equal spacing on both sides. Tighten bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).





9. Install propeller shaft (2) with reference marks (3) aligned.
10. Install new companion flange bolts and tighten to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.).

Note: Companion flange bolts have a Loctite patch, new bolts should be used. If bolts are not available, clean bolts and apply Loctite 242 to the threads.

11. With vehicle on the ground, tighten upper control arm bolts to 170 Nm (125 ft. lbs.). Tighten lower control arm nuts to 230 Nm (170 ft. lbs.).
