Rear Suspension Leaf Spring(s) - Removal






LEAF SPRING

NOTE:
Two types of shackles are used for different vehicle applications. There are tension shackles and compression shackles. A tension shackle sits on its frame mounting bracket (spring above), and a compression shackle hangs from its mounting bracket (spring below. The tension type shackle must be removed with the spring.

NOTE:
All views are typical.





1. Raise and support the vehicle Service and Repair.

2. Support the axle with a suitable holding fixture.

3. Remove the nuts (2), spring clamp bolts (1) and the plate that attach the spring (3) to the axle.

4. Remove the nuts and bolts from the spring front eye to frame.





5. For a tension type shackle (3) only, remove the shackle to mounting bracket bolt (4) and flag nut (5).





6. For a compression type shackle (2) only, remove the spring eye to shackle bolt and nut (3).

7. Remove the spring from the vehicle.

8. Remove and transfer any necessary components.
