Attachment III - Technical Instruction

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

PERFORM THE FOLLOWING CHECKS TO DETERMINE IF A FIPL SENSOR MALFUNCTION HAS CONTRIBUTED TO AN INTERNAL TRANSMISSION CLUTCH FAILURE.





1. Replace the FIPL sensor and reset per the Engine/Emissions Diagnostic Manual procedure.

2. Inspect the transmission fluid for abnormal conditions such as a burnt odor or if friction material/metal particles are found. The fluid sample MUST be taken through the converter drain plug.

3. FLUID OK - perform road test and EEC self-test (repair as required).

3a. FLUID NOT OK - if the fluid has a burnt odor or if friction material and/or metal particles are found:

- replace the torque converter
- DRAIN all transmission fluid and FLUSH the cooler line system
- REFILL with new fluid
- perform ROAD TEST and EEC SELF-TEST (repair as required).

NOTE: IF THE EXTERIOR OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER HAS TURNED BLUE IN COLOR DUE TO HEAT, CALL THE SHARONVILLE TRANSMISSION PLANT HOTLINE, (513) 782-7371 FOR INSTRUCTIONS.

4. Scrap the removed FIPL sensor.
