Subject:
Certain 1996 and 1997 model year Explorer/Mountaineer Vehicles with the 5.0L Engine that, based on available records, are currently located in certain cold weather states - PCV System Modification

Affected Vehicles
Certain 1996 and 1997 model year Explorer/Mountaineer vehicles produced at St. Louis Assembly Plant from 2/2/96 through 2/17/97 and at Louisville Assembly Plant from 2/12/96 through 2/17/97 with the 5.0L engine that, based on available records, are currently located in the states below:

Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan (U.P. Only), Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming

Reasons For Recall
Vehicle operation at highway speeds for extended intervals under cold, northern-climate winter driving extremes, may result in ice forming in the throttle body. This may eventually cause the throttle plate to remain in the highway cruising position. Should this condition occur, the vehicle may not slow down or stop as promptly as expected. An accident could potentially result.

Service Action
To correct this condition, the PCV system will be modified.

If an owner of one of these vehicles which is not listed in OASIS believes his/her vehicle should have been included or if a vehicle not listed is being delivered to a customer in one of the affected states, dealers are to contact their regional office for approval and submit the claim under this program to obtain reimbursement.
