Throttle Body - Whoosh Noise Heard on Acceleration

^ NOISE-"WHOOSH"-HEARD ON TIP-IN ACCELERATION-VEHICLES WITH 4.0L SOHC ENGINE

LIGHT TRUCK: 1997 EXPLORER

ISSUE:

A "whoosh" noise may be heard on tip-in acceleration on some vehicles. This may be caused by an air flow rush around the throttle plate in the induction plenum.

ACTION:

Install an Air Flow Straightener Spacer Plate. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify the concern.

2. Remove and replace the accelerator cable with a longer Accelerator Cable (F77Z-9A758-GB). Refer to the 1997 Explorer Workshop Manual.

3. Remove and replace the speed control cable with a revised Speed Control Cable (F87Z-9A825-GA). Refer to the 1997 Explorer Workshop Manual.

4. Remove and replace radiator shroud with revised Radiator Shroud (F87Z-8146-HA). Refer to the 1997 Explorer Workshop Manual.

5. Remove throttle body attachment bolts and position throttle body forward.





6. Install Air Flow Straightener Spacer Plate (F87Z-9A589-AA) between the throttle body and intake manifold (Figure 1).

7. Reinstall throttle body attachment bolts.
