Disassembly and Assembly

Halfshaft

Special Tools:

Disassembly
1. Remove the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle.





2. CAUTION: Do not damage the front wheel halfshaft joint boot.

Remove the two front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamps.





3. Slide the inboard front wheel halfshaft joint boot from the constant velocity (CV) joint housing.





4. Separate the CV joint housing from the CV joint.





5. Index-mark the interconnecting shaft and the inboard CV joint.





6. Remove the retainer circlip.





7. Remove the inboard CV joint.





8. Remove the front wheel halfshaft joint boot.





9. Remove the two front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamps.





10. Remove the front wheel halfshaft joint boot.

11. CAUTION: Do not disassemble the side shaft assembly. Install a new assembly if worn or damaged.

Thoroughly wipe all of the grease from the side shaft assembly and the boots. Inspect all of the components for wear and damage. Discard the components, as necessary.

Assembly





1. Pack the outboard CV joint with grease.
1. Use 185 grams (4.35 ounces) of grease.
2. Spread any remaining grease evenly inside the front wheel halfshaft joint boot.





2. NOTE: Clean the front wheel halfshaft joint boot mounting surfaces of excess grease before installing the boot.

Position the front wheel halfshaft joint boot and the front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamps.
1. Position the front wheel halfshaft joint boot.
2. Position the front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamps.





3. NOTE: Tighten the through-bolt until the special tool is in the closed position.

Using the special tool, install the front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamps.





4. Position the inboard front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamp.





5. Position the front wheel halfshaft joint boot.





6. NOTE: Align the index marks. Install the inboard CV joint.





7. Install the retainer circlip.





8. Lubricate the inboard CV joint needle bearings.





9. Fill the CV joint housing with 200 grams (4.71 ounces) of grease.





10. Position the CV joint housing onto the inboard CV joint.





11. NOTE: Clean the front wheel halfshaft joint boot mounting surfaces of excess grease before installing the boot.

Position the front wheel halfshaft joint boot and the front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamp.
1. Position the front wheel halfshaft joint boot.
2. Position the front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamp.





12. Set the halfshaft assembled length to specification.
1. Measure the entire assembly length.
2. Push in or pull out on the inner joint as necessary to adjust the halfshaft assembled length to specification.
3. Hold the inner joint to prevent the assembled length from changing, and insert a small flat blade screwdriver between the boot and the joint to equalize the pressure.





13. NOTE: Tighten the through-bolt until the special tool is in the closed position.

Using the special tool, install the front wheel halfshaft joint boot clamps.
14. Install the halfshaft assembly in the vehicle.
