Removal
WARNING: Use of any other than approved DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING: Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
1. Remove the brake master cylinder filler cap. Check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
3. Set up the caliper locking pin drive-out.
^ Set the notched end of the special tool at a 45-degree angle against the end of the upper caliper locking pin.
^ Tap the tool to squeeze the caliper locking pin so the retention tabs can clear the support bracket.
4. Drive the caliper locking pin out of the caliper locking groove.
5. Repeat for the lower caliper locking pin.
6. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.
Position the caliper aside.
^ Support the caliper using mechanic's wire.
7. Remove the brake pads from the rear disc brake caliper.
^ Pull the inboard brake pad out of the caliper pistons and out of the rear disc brake caliper.
^ Press the end of the outboard brake pad to clear the retention lugs and slide it up and out of the rear disc brake caliper.
8. CAUTION: Install new pads if the lining(s) are worn to or past the specified thickness above the metal backing plate. Install new pads in complete axle sets.
Inspect the brake pads and brake disc for wear or contamination and install new as necessary.
9. Inspect the brake caliper for leaks.
^ If leaks are found, disassembly is required.
Installation
1. CAUTION: Protect the piston and boots when pushing the caliper piston into the caliper piston bores.
If installing new brake pads, using a suitable tool and a worn brake pad, compress the disc brake caliper pistons into the caliper.
2. Install the brake pads.
^ Position the outboard brake pad anti-rattle spring, and slide the brake pad down until the retaining lugs are seated in the notch.
^ Position the inboard brake pad and seat the anti-rattle springs in the caliper pistons.
3. Coat the caliper locking keys and the caliper locking grooves with silicone brake caliper grease.
4. Position the brake caliper into the support bracket.
5. Start the caliper locking pin in the caliper locking groove.
6. Using the Brake Caliper Pin Remover, drive the caliper locking pin into the caliper locking groove until the retention tabs emerge.
7. Repeat for the other caliper locking pin.
8. Apply the brake several times to verify correct brake operation.
^ Check the brake caliper for leaks.
9. Check and fill the brake master cylinder reservoir as necessary with clean DOT 3 brake fluid.
