Exhaust System: Service and Repair
Exhaust System AlignmentAll engines
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Loosen all fasteners joining the exhaust system components.
3. Beginning at the front of the vehicle, align the exhaust system to establish the maximum clearance.
2.3L
4. Tighten the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust downpipe nuts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
3.0L and 4.0L
5. NOTE: RH side shown, LH side similar.
Tighten the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust Y-pipe nuts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
6. Tighten the exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter nuts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
7. Tighten the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).

8. Tighten the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
All engines
9. Start the engine and check the exhaust system for leaks.
