Removal and Installation
All vehicles
1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
3. Remove the 2 screws and position the hood release handle aside.
4. Remove the screws, pull out the release the retaining clips and remove the lower steering column opening finish panel.
5. Remove the 5 steering column finish panel reinforcement bolts and the steering column finish panel reinforcement.
^ To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
6. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
7. Disconnect the multi-function switch electrical connector.
8. Disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors.
1 Remove the ground bolt.
2 Release the pin-type retainers and disconnect the electrical connectors.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
9. Remove the transmission range indicator bolt and the transmission range indicator.
^ To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.).
10. Disconnect the shift cable from the shift tube lever and the steering column bracket.
All vehicles
11. Disconnect the brake shift interlock solenoid electrical connector.
12. NOTE: Secure the steering column in place so it will not turn after the pinch bolt is removed.
Remove the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt and disconnect the shaft from the steering column.
^ Discard the bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
13. Remove the steering column support bracket nuts and the steering column.
^ To install, tighten to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
14. NOTE: A new upper steering column shaft bolt must be installed.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
