Pinpoint Test AJ: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the wrench message center warning indicator data from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status (gasoline and diesel) and the transmission status (gasoline engines) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. On the diesel engine, the IC receives the transmission status from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) over the HS-CAN. When a fault condition exists in ETC system or the transmission (gasoline engines), the PCM provides the IC with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator. When a transmission fault condition exists in the transmission on the diesel engine, the TCM sends the IC a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator.

If the ETC message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0100 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator ON.

If the transmission status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0101 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator ON.

NOTE: If U0100 is set in the IC other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC concern
- Transmission concern
- IC

PINPOINT TEST AJ: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

-------------------------------------------------
AJ1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0100 or DTC U0101 recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100, GO to Pinpoint Test BD. Pinpoint Tests BD: DTC U0100

For DTC U0101, GO to Pinpoint Test BE. Pinpoint Tests BE: DTC U0101

No
For gasoline engine, GO to AJ2.

For diesel engine, GO to AJ3.

-------------------------------------------------
AJ2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
If the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator is never on, GO to AJ4.

For PCM DTCs, REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

No
If the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator is always on, GO to AJ5.

-------------------------------------------------
AJ3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TCM SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded TCM DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
If the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator is never on, GO to AJ4.

For TCM DTCs, REFER to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems.

No
If the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator is always on, GO to AJ5.

-------------------------------------------------
AJ4 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE DOOR AJAR MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR

- Open the LH front door.
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center indicators rotate through each of the warnings. Allow the displays to rotate through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning indicator is active.
- Observe the message center or integrated display area of the IC.
- Is the door ajar message center warning indicator active?

Yes
GO to AJ5.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
AJ5 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE WRENCH AND ENGINE OVER-TEMPERATURE MESSAGE CENTER INDICATORS

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: PCM .
- Ignition ON.
- Observe the message center or integrated display area of the IC with the PCM connected and disconnected.
- Do the powertrain malfunction (wrench) and engine over-temperature message center warning indicators remain off when the PCM is connected and turn on with the PCM disconnected?

Yes
The system is operating normally at this time. If the PCM detects a concern with the electronic throttle control or transmission, the PCM sets DTCs and sends a command to the IC to illuminate the wrench message center indicator.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
