Attachment III - Technical Information

OVERVIEW

The Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) may bind, allowing an operator to inadvertently shift the vehicle into gear without the brake pedal being depressed. Before demonstrating or delivering any of the vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to perform an inspection procedure, and replace the BSIA as necessary.

INSPECTION

1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position.

2. Inspect the function of the BSIA.

a. Fully depress the brake pedal and then remove your foot from the brake pedal allowing it to return to the full up position each time. Perform this action 10 times.

b. Attempt to remove the gear shift lever out of the park position, without depressing the brake pedal.

c. Repeat steps a and b, 7 times.

3. Inspection results:

- If the gear shift lever did not move from the park position in any of the attempts, no further action is required and the vehicle can be released to the customer.

- If the gear shift lever did move from the park position in any of the attempts, without the brake pedal being depressed, proceed to the "Service Procedure".

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Replace the BSIA. For additional information, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-05.
