Pinpoint Test N: The Boost Gauge Is Inoperative (Diesel Only)
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the engine turbo boost data from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IPC monitors the turbo boost data and commands the gauge indication with a corresponding movement of the pointer from 0-276 kPa (0-40 psi).
If the engine turbo boost data is invalid or missing for 5 seconds or less, the IPC defaults the boost gauge to the last setting, based upon the last known good engine turbo boost message. If the engine turbo boost data is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC sets DTC U0100:00 in continuous memory and defaults the boost gauge to the 0 boost position. If the engine turbo boost data is deemed invalid by the IPC for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC sets DTC U0401:00 and defaults the boost gauge to the 0 boost position.
NOTE: If DTC U0100:00 sets in the IPC, other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, temperature gauge or tachometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PCM
- IPC
PINPOINT TEST N: THE BOOST GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE (DIESEL ONLY)
-------------------------------------------------
N1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check the recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to N2.
-------------------------------------------------
N2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IPC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BA. For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Pinpoint Tests BA: DTC U0100:00
No
GO to N3.
-------------------------------------------------
N3 CARRY OUT THE BOOST GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC DataLogger.
- NOTE: Make sure that the gauge begins at 0 psi stop . If necessary, adjust the scan tool to command the gauge to 0 psi mark before beginning this step.
- Select the IPC boost gauge (TURBO_GAUGE) active command. Command the boost gauge to 69 kPa (10 psi), 138 kPa (20 psi), 201 kPa (29 psi) and 276 kPa (40 psi).
- Does the boost gauge match each command?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Electronic Engine Controls - Diesel Engine Powertrain Control Module (PCM). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). TEST the system for normal operation.
