Pinpoint Test E: The Heated Exterior Mirrors Are Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 56, Heated Windows for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 124, Power Mirrors for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation
Under normal operation, when rear window defrost is selected, (button is on Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM), touchscreen or voice command) the HVAC module provides ground to the rear window defrost relay coil causing the contacts in the relay to close. Voltage is supplied to Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 50 (15A) to power the heated LH and RH exterior rear view mirrors. The exterior rear view heated mirrors do not share a common ground.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Exterior mirror glass
- Exterior mirror
PINPOINT TEST E : THE HEATED EXTERIOR MIRRORS ARE INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
E1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST SYSTEM
- With the engine running, activate the rear window defrost.
- Using a infrared temperature gun or equivalent measure the temperature of the rear window glass for approximately 30 seconds noting changes in temperature.
Does the temperature of the rear window glass rise?
Yes
GO to E2.
No
REFER to Windows and Glass to diagnose the rear window defrost system.
E2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE HEATED EXTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRRORS
- With the rear window defrost ON, using a infrared temperature gun or equivalent measure the temperature of the RH and LH exterior rear view mirror glass for approximately 30 seconds noting changes in temperature.
Does at least one heated mirror glass operate correctly?
Yes
GO to E3.
No
VERIFY that BJB (Battery Junction Box) fuse 50 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit CRD06 (BN/YE) for an open. If not OK, REPAIR circuit CRD50 (YE/OG) harness side for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
E3 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE HEATED EXTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR GLASS
- Disconnect: Inoperative Heated Exterior Rear View Mirror C566 (LH) or C622 (RH).
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: The rear window defrost system activates for 10 minutes.
With the engine running, activate the rear window defrost.
- Measure the voltage between:
- LH exterior rear view mirrorC516-7, circuit CBB50 (YE/OG), harness side and ground.
- RH exterior rear view mirrorC622-7, circuit CBB50 (YE/OG), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to E4.
No
REPAIR the circuit for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
E4 CHECK THE INOPERATIVE EXTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between:
- LH exterior rear view mirrorC516-6, circuit GD133 (BK), harness side and ground.
- RH exterior rear view mirrorC622-6, circuit GD140 (BK/GN), harness side and ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
CHECK the LH or RH exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the exterior mirror motors for shorted circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness. If the jumper harness cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new LH or RH exterior mirror. REFER to Exterior Mirror . If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror glass. REFER to Exterior Mirror Glass . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the circuit for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
