Pinpoint Test L: Incorrect Transmission Temperature Gauge Indication
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the transmission temperature data from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The PCM filters the transmission temperature input and sends the filtered data to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) then further dampens the temperature data to eliminate minor fluctuations in the gauge indication.
If the transmission temperature data is missing or invalid from the PCM for 5 seconds or less, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the transmission temperature gauge to the last setting, based upon the last known good message received. If the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) does not receive the transmission temperature data from the PCM for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 in continuous memory and defaults the transmission temperature gauge to the cold (C) stop position. If the transmission temperature data is deemed invalid by the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0401:00 and defaults the transmission temperature gauge to the cold (C) stop position.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Transmission concern
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST L : INCORRECT TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE GAUGE INDICATION
L1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check the recorded PCM DTCs from the self-test.
Are any transmission temperature DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems.
For all other DTCs, REFER to Computers and Control Systems.
No
GO to L2.
L2 CARRY OUT THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.
- NOTE: Make sure the gauge begins at full cold (C). If necessary, adjust the scan tool to command the gauge to full cold (C) before beginning this step.
Select the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) transmission temperature gauge (TRANS_TEMP) active command. Command the transmission temperature gauge as follows:
Scan Tool Setting Gauge Indication Temperature 18% Beginning of normal range 27°C (81°F) 45 and 54% Center of normal range (just below or above center respectively) 28-106°C (82-223°F) 81% End of normal range 107°C (225°F)
Does the transmission temperature gauge indication match the temperature specification?
Yes
GO to L3.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
L3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AT. Pinpoint Test AT: DTC U0100:00
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to L4.
L4 CHECK THE PCM TEMPERATURE PID
NOTE: This step may require the use of an assistant to monitor the transmission temperature PID and the transmission temperature gauge indication.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM DataLogger.
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: The transmission temperature should range below 10°C (50°F) with the gauge in the cold (C) range, between 27 to 107°C (81 to 225°F) with the gauge in the normal or mid-range and above 135°C (275°F) with the gauge in the hot (H) range.
Select the PCM transmission temperature gauge PID (TFT).
- Beginning with a cold transmission, drive the vehicle while monitoring the PCM transmission temperature PID.
Does the PID agree with the position of the transmission temperature gauge indication at different temperature ranges?
Yes
The transmission temperature gauge is operating correctly at this time.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation. TEST the system for normal operation.
