Pinpoint Test N: The Boost Gauge Is Inoperative (Diesel Only)

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the engine turbo boost data from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) monitors the turbo boost data and commands the gauge indication with a corresponding movement of the pointer from 0-276 kPa (0-40 psi).

If the engine turbo boost data is invalid or missing for 5 seconds or less, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the boost gauge to the last setting, based upon the last known good engine turbo boost message. If the engine turbo boost data is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 in continuous memory and defaults the boost gauge to the 0 boost position. If the engine turbo boost data is deemed invalid by the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0401:00 and defaults the boost gauge to the 0 boost position.

NOTE: If DTC U0100:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, temperature gauge or tachometer.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- PCM

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST N : THE BOOST GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE (DIESEL ONLY)

N1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

- Check the recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to N2.

N2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BA. Pinpoint Test BA: DTC U0100:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to N3.

N3 CARRY OUT THE BOOST GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.

- NOTE: Make sure that the gauge begins at 0 psi stop. If necessary, adjust the scan tool to command the gauge to 0 psi mark before beginning this step.
Select the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) boost gauge (TURBO_GAUGE) active command. Command the boost gauge to 69 kPa (10 psi), 138 kPa (20 psi), 201 kPa (29 psi) and 276 kPa (40 psi).

Scan Tool Setting Gauge Indication 30% 10 psi 50-55% 20 psi (just left or right of the mark respectively) 75% 30 psi

Does the boost gauge match each command?

Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
