Passenger Seat Backrest With Manual Seat Track
NOTE: Refer to Seat Backrest - Front, With Fold Flat for recliner-to-seat track bolt tightening sequence and torque specification.
WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seat back pad, trim cover and side air bag module and nuts must be installed. The seat back frame should be replaced if necessary.
1. Remove the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to Seat Backrest- Front, With Fold Flat .
2. If not equipped with a DVD player, remove the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .
3. Remove the outboard upper recliner cover.
1. Pull at the front and release the clip.
2. Pivot the top of the outboard upper recliner cover back and remove.
- Pull the fold-flat release strap out through the opening.
4. Separate the cables and wire harness from the outboard recliner.
- Separate the fold-flat cable retainer and cover from the outboard recliner.
- Separate the side air bag module wire harness pin-type retainer from the outboard recliner.
- If equipped, separate the manual lumbar cable retainer from the outboard recliner.
5. Remove the inboard upper recliner cover.
1. Pull at the front and release the clip.
2. Pivot the top of the inboard upper recliner cover back and remove.
6. Separate the fold-flat cable retainer, cover and DVD player wire harness pin-type retainers (if equipped) from the inboard recliner.
7. Separate the backrest cover lower J-clips.
8. Release the backrest cover clips and open the zippers.
9. If equipped with a DVD player, remove the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .
10. Position the backrest cover aside and remove the 4 recliner-to-backrest frame bolts (2 shown). Remove the recliner assembly.
11. Remove 2 screws and inner recliner cover from the inboard and outboard recliners.
12. Invert the backrest cover up and remove the first row of hog rings.
- Route the fold-flat cable and wire harness(es) out through the backrest cover opening.
13. Invert the backrest cover up to expose the side air bag module deployment chute.
- If equipped, feed the fold-flat cable, lumbar cable and backrest wire harness through the side openings of the backrest cover.
14. Squeeze the ends of the deployment chute clips together and open the deployment chute.
15. From the rear of the backrest, separate the backrest cover J-clip attached to the backrest frame wire.
16. Invert the backrest cover up and pull the deployment chute through the backrest foam pad.
17. Invert the backrest cover up and remove the second row of hog rings.
18. Remove the backrest cover.
19. If equipped, disconnect the backrest heated seat mat and separate the connector pin-type retainer from the backrest frame.
20. Remove the backrest frame assembly from the backrest foam pad.
21. Separate the retainers and remove the fold-flat cable.
22. Seats with manual seat track, remove the side air bag module in the following sequence.
1. Separate the pin-type retainer and side air bag wire harness.
2. Remove the 2 nuts and the side air bag module.
23. Seats with power track, remove the side air bag module in the following sequence.
1. Disconnect the electrical connector and separate the pin-type retainer.
2. Remove the 2 nuts and the side air bag module.
24. If equipped, remove the manual lumbar in the following sequence.
1. Separate the manual lumbar cable pin-type retainer.
2. Squeeze the manual lumbar retaining clips together, on each side and separate them from the backrest frame.
3. Remove the manual lumbar.
25. If equipped, remove the static lumbar in the following sequence.
1. Squeeze the retainers together at the bottom and separate from the backrest frame.
2. Remove the clips at the top.
3. Remove the static lumbar.
26. Seats with heat, separate the retainers and remove the wire harness.
Assembly
1. Seats with heat, position the wire harness and install the retainers.
2. If equipped, position the static lumbar and install the retainers at the bottom.
3. NOTE: Always use new clips.
If equipped, position the static lumbar behind the backrest frame wire and install 2 new retainers.
- After installation, make sure the retainers are holding the static lumbar tightly against the backrest frame wire or squeaks can occur.
4. If equipped, install the manual lumbar.
1. Squeeze the manual lumbar retaining clips together on each side and install them to the backrest frame.
2. Route the manual lumbar cable and attach the pin-type retainer.
5. WARNING: Before installing the seat side air bag module/deployment chute assembly:
- Inspect the side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material.
- Remove any foreign material from the mounting surfaces of the deployment chute, the seat backrest frame mounting bracket and the air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad.
- Install new parts if damaged.
Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: The side air bag modules are keyed left and right. If the side air bag module locator pin does not align to the backrest frame hole, the wrong side air bag module is being installed.
Seats with heat, position the 2 side air bag module studs and locator pin through the backrest frame and install the 2 nuts.
1. Position the side air bag module and install the 2 nuts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
2. Route the wire harness, connect the electrical connector and attach the pin-type retainer.
6. WARNING: Before installing the seat side air bag module/deployment chute assembly:
- Inspect the side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material.
- Remove any foreign material from the mounting surfaces of the deployment chute, the seat backrest frame mounting bracket and the air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad.
- Install new parts if damaged.
Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: The side air bag modules are keyed left and right. If the side air bag module locator pin does not align to the backrest frame hole, the wrong side air bag module is being installed.
Seats without heat, position the 2 side air bag module studs and locator pin through the backrest frame and install the 2 nuts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
7. Seats without heat, position the side air bag wire harness and install the pin-type retainer.
8. Position the fold-flat cable and install the pin-type retainers.
9. WARNING: Inspect the seat side air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad for any foreign material. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
Position the backrest frame assembly into the backrest foam pad.
10. If equipped, connect the backrest heated seat mat and attach the connector pin-type retainer to the backrest frame.
11. Route the fold-flat cable and DVD player wire harness (if equipped) out from between the backrest frame and backrest foam pad at the inboard side of the backrest.
12. If equipped, route the fold-flat cable, lumbar cable and backrest feed wire harness out from between the backrest frame and backrest foam pad at the outboard side of the backrest.
13. WARNING: Check the seat side air bag deployment chute for damage. The deployment chute must not be repaired. If there is any damage to the deployment chute, a new seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed as a unit. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
With the backrest cover inside out, position the backrest cover to the backrest foam pad and frame assembly.
- Align the head restraint holes in the backrest cover to the holes in the backrest foam pad and frame.
14. Roll the backrest cover down and position both ends of the deployment chute through the backrest foam pad opening.
15. Position the deployment chute around the side air bag module.
1. Insert the outboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the backrest frame.
2. Insert the inboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the backrest frame, pulling it around the inboard side of the backrest frame.
16. Engage the side air bag deployment chute retaining clips and snap them together.
- The side air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the backrest frame.
- Align the side air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it is centered around the side air bag module.
17. From the rear of the backrest, attach the backrest cover J-clip to the backrest frame wire.
18. Roll the backrest cover down and install the 3 second row hog rings.
19. Roll the backrest cover down and install the 3 first row hog rings.
20. If equipped with a DVD player, install the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .
21. Roll the backrest cover all the way down.
22. Position the inboard recliner covers onto the inboard and outboard recliners and install 2 screws to each cover.
23. Position the inboard recliner to the backrest frame and install the 2 recliner-to-backrest frame bolts.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
- Make sure the fold-flat cable and DVD wire harness (if equipped) are routed out through the backrest cover before installing the inboard recliner.
24. Attach the fold-flat cable retainer, cover and DVD player wire harness pin-type retainers (if equipped) to the inboard recliner.
25. Position the outboard recliner to the backrest frame and install the 2 recliner-to-backrest frame bolts.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
- If equipped, make sure the fold-flat cable, manual lumbar cable and backrest feed wire harness are routed out through the backrest cover before installing the inboard recliner.
26. Attach the cables and wire harness to the outboard recliner.
- If equipped, attach the manual lumbar cable retainer to the outboard recliner.
- Attach the side air bag module wire harness pin-type retainer to the outboard recliner.
- Attach the fold-flat cable retainer and cover to the outboard recliner.
27. Close the zippers and attach the backrest cover retainers.
28. Install the inboard upper recliner cover in the following sequence.
1. Align the inboard upper recliner cover pocket to the recliner bracket.
2. Pivot the top of the inboard upper recliner cover forward and attach the pocket to the bracket.
3. Push in at the front and seat the clip.
29. Install the outboard upper recliner cover in the following sequence.
1. Position the fold-flat release strap through the opening.
2. Align the outboard upper recliner cover pocket to the recliner bracket.
3. Pivot the top of the outboard upper recliner cover forward and attach the pocket to the bracket.
4. Push in at the front and seat the clip.
30. If not equipped with a DVD player, install the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .
31. Install the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to Seat Backrest- Front, With Fold Flat .
