EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE STICKS/BINDS - BUILT
ON OR BEFORE 11/5/2012

FORD:
2013 Escape

ISSUE
Some 2013 Escape vehicles built on or before 11/5/2012 may exhibit an exterior door handle that sticks, binds, or is slow to return. This condition may be intermittent or seem worse in colder ambient temperatures.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open the door, remove body plug from door jamb, and loosen the handle reinforcement screw until the exterior door handle bezel pops loose. (Figure 1)

2. Remove both sections of the exterior door handle, bezel and the rubber gaskets. (Figure 2)

3. Loosen the handle reinforcement front screw one (1) turn. (Figure 3)

4. Slide the handle reinforcement rearward so that the plastic tab contacts the edge of the sheet metal. Apply force to hold in place while tightening the front screw to 1.9 N.m (17 lb-in), otherwise, reinforcement will slide forward and repeat concern. (Figure 4)

5. Install the original gasket, bezel and exterior door handle.

6. The gap between front and rear section of exterior door handle should be 1 mm (.039 in) nominal. (Figure 5)

7. Tighten handle reinforcement screw and install original body plug.

8. Verify the exterior door handle returns to the flush position every time, regardless of the direction from which it is pulled. Function/cycle the handle ten (10) times as follows:

a. Pull straight out (normal) four (4) times.

b. Pull rearward three (3) times.

c. Pull up and rearward to ensure handle returns to flush position when pulled from all three (3) angles three (3) times.
