Disassemble

1. Begin disassembly as follows:

a. Place third clutch assembly upright and support in soft jaw vise.









b. Compress sprag retaining ring near one end with screwdriver through side slot, then slide one blade of retaining ring tool J 38450 or equivalent between ring and input shaft drum to hold ring clear of groove.

c. Repeat previous step with another tool blade near other end of retaining ring, then with a third blade opposite the first two, then with two more blades spaced at equal intervals around the ring.

d. Pull sun gear and sprag assembly out until sprag retaining ring clears ring groove, then remove blades of J 38450 and then remove sprag assembly from drum.

e. Remove thrust washer, bearing, and clutch plates. If clutch plates are not being replaced, they must be reinstalled in original positions.






2. Compressed third clutch piston using tool J 23075 or equivalent and a press. Do not damage spring seat by over compressing.

3. Remove snap ring, then release clutch piston and remove tool. Do not let spring seat catch in snap ring groove.

4. Remove spring seat, springs and piston.






5. Remove sprag assembly from clutch sun gear, then remove sprag cage and retaining rings from outer sprag race.
