Wind Noise From the Windshield

(Supersedes 04-078, dated April 11, 2006, to update the information marked by the black bars and asterisks)

SYMPTOM

Wind noise from the windshield area while driving the vehicle.

PROBABLE CAUSE

A gap between the cowl and the windshield, or a gap between the windshield side trim and the windshield.

Repair Procedure A

Out of warranty:
Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

DIAGNOSIS

1. Verify the noise by driving the vehicle at highway speeds.

^ If you hear wind noise coming from the windshield area, go to step 2.

^ If there is no wind noise, or the noise is coming from a different location, this service bulletin does not apply.





2. Cover all the edges of the windshield side trim on the driver's side with masking tape, as shown.

3. Test-drive the vehicle under the same conditions as in step 1.

^ If the wind noise is gone, do Repair Procedure B to the driver's side.

^ If you still hear wind noise, go to step 4.

4. Cover all the edges of the windshield trim on the passenger's side with masking tape.

5. Test-drive the vehicle under the same conditions as in step 1.

^ If the wind noise is gone, do Repair Procedure B to the passenger's side.

^ If you still hear wind noise, do Repair Procedure A.





REPAIR PROCEDURE A





1. Remove both windshield wiper arms.





2. Using a trim tool, remove the five clips from the leading edge of the cowl cover. Carefully pull up the trailing edge of the cover to release the other nine clips.





3. Release the cowl cover hooks by pulling the cover forward. Release the hood hinge cover hooks from the front fender and the windshield side trim.





4. Mark the windshield washer tube where it clips to the cowl; release the tube from the cover, then remove the cover.

*5. Remove the grommets from the body (the new cover has redesigned clips, and grommets are not necessary).

6. Install the new cowl cover:

^ Use the marks on the washer tube to correctly align it to the cowl cover.

^ Align the cowl cover hooks under the cowl edge.

^ Push the cover securely into place (push toward the rear of the vehicle).*

7. Close the hood, and check that the windshield washer operates properly.

8. Reinstall the wiper arms. Torque the nuts to 29.5 N.m (21 lb-ft).

REPAIR PROCEDURE B

*1. Lift the rubber hood hinge cover from the lower trim. It is not necessary to remove the cowl cover.





2. Carefully insert the end of a trim tool under the windshield side trim next to the lower clip, then release the lower clip from the windshield by pushing the clip.

3. Starting at the bottom, remove the windshield side trim.

^ Carefully insert a trim tool under the trim next to the clips.

^ While pulling up on the clip portion of the trim, push each of the four small hooks in with a trim tool in the numbered sequence shown to release the clip from the retainer. Do not try to pry up the clip if it is hard to release from the retainer.





^ Gradually work your way up to release each of the clips.*

4. Remove the old side trim, and hold it for warranty inspection.

5. Remove any stress-whitened or damaged upperclip retainers:

^ Scrape off the adhesive tape from under the retainer while heating the area around it with a heat gun (212 to 248 °F, 100 to 120 °C).





^ Do not heat the painted surface around the retainers.*

*6. Install new retainers:

^ Peel away the adhesive backing.

^ Line up the new retainers with the marks left on the body by the old retainers, and press them into place.

^ Apply two-part epoxy adhesive around the edges of the retainers.

NOTE:
Do not skip this step. The adhesive tape, by itself, will not hold the retainers.

7. Fit all of the windshield side trim clips into the retainers on the body, fit the clip to the windshield, then push on the trim until the clips snap into place.





NOTE:
If necessary, adjust the clip positions to align with the retainers.

8. Install the rubber hood hinge cover.
