DTC P1891: Problem in Start Clutch Control System

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review General Troubleshooting Information.

1. Check whether the HDS indicates any other DTC simultaneously with DTC P1891.
Are there any other DTCs?
YES - Troubleshoot the indicated DTC, and recheck for DTC P1891 after troubleshooting.
NO - Go to step 2.

2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
4. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector.
5. Start the engine.
6. Shift to the D position, and check whether the vehicle moves.
Does the vehicle move?
YES - Go to step 7.
NO - Replace the start clutch, then go to step 16.

7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
8. Connect the solenoid harness connector.
9. Start the engine, and shift to the D position.
10. Check whether the vehicle creeps, and check the creeping speed on level ground.
Does the vehicle creep, and is the creeping speed about 3 mph (5 km/h)?
YES - Go to step 11.
NO - Replace CVT start clutch pressure control valve, then go to step 16.

11. Park the vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake, and block all four wheels securely.
12. Firmly press the brake pedal, and shift to the D position.
13. While pressing the brake pedal firmly, also press the accelerator for 6-8 seconds at full throttle, and measure the stall speed rpm,
Does the stall speed exceed 3,500 rpm?
YES - Replace the start clutch, then go to step 16.
NO - Go to step 14.

14. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector.
15. Start the engine, shift to the D position, and check whether the vehicle moves.
Does the vehicle move?
YES - Check for loose or poor connections at the PCM connector terminals. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck for DTC P1891. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good PCM, replace the original PCM, then go to step 16.
NO - Replace the start clutch, then go to step 16.

16. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
17. Test-drive the vehicle for more than 1 minute at speeds about 37 mph (60 km/h).
18. Check that DTC P1891 recurs.
Is DTC P1891 indicated?
YES - Replace the transmission.
NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
