Tailgate Latch Intermittently Becomes Half-Latched or Does Not Work
SYMPTOM
The tailgate latch intermittently becomes half-latched, cycles from latched to half-latched, or does not work at all.
PROBABLE CAUSE
There is water in the tailgate handle switch.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the tailgate handle switch assembly.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
^ Put on gloves to protect your hands.
^ Take care not to bend or scratch the trim, the panels, or the tailgate.
^ Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
^ If any trim clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them.
^ Push the trim clips securely into place.
1. Remove the tailgate interior upper trim panel:
^ Detach the hooks and the tabs from the left and right tailgate side trim.
^ Pull the tailgate upper trim panel back by hand to detach the clips, then remove the panel.
2. Remove the left and right tailgate side trim:
^ Pull out the top of the side trim to detach the clips.
^ On models with a power tailgate, release the rod from the slit.
^ Detach the tabs and the hooks from the tailgate lower trim panel.
3. Remove the tailgate pull pocket:
^ Carefully pull the edge of the tailgate lower trim panel just beside the tailgate pull pocket by hand, and push out the inside hooks.
^ Pull down the upper edge of the pocket and release the lower tabs.
^ On models with a power tailgate, disconnect the power tailgate close switch connector.
4. Pry out the pull strap cap, remove the bolt, then remove the pull strap.
5. Remove the tailgate lower trim panel:
^ Detach the clips on either side of the tailgate latch.
^ Pull down the tailgate lower trim panel to detach all the remaining clips.
6. Disconnect the tailgate outer handle switch connector, then remove the two nuts holding the handle to the tailgate.
7. Pull out on the tailgate handle to detach the four clips, then remove the handle from the tailgate.
8. Remove the four grommets from the tailgate, then insert the grommets onto the clips on the tailgate handle.
9. Remove the six seals from around the tailgate handle.
10. Remove the six screws from the inside of the tailgate handle.
11. Separate the two pieces of the tailgate handle.
12. Remove the two switch mounting screws from the inner side of the tailgate handle, and remove the switch.
13. Install the new switch on the inner side of the tailgate handle.
14. Reinstall the six screws that hold the inner tailgate handle to the outer tailgate handle.
15. Install six new seals around the tailgate handle.
16. Reinstall the tailgate handle to the tailgate.
17. Reconnect the tailgate switch connector.
18. Reinstall the tailgate inner panel.
19. Reinstall the pull strap.
20. On models with a power tailgate, reconnect the power tailgate close switch connector.
21. Reinstall the tailgate pull pocket.
22. On models with a power tailgate, reinstall the rod through the slit.
23. Reinstall the left and right tailgate side trim.
24. Reinstall the tailgate upper trim panel.
25. Test the switch and the tailgate operation.
