*REVISION SUMMARY

SYMPTOM

There is a dull popping, knocking, or creaking sound coming from the front of the vehicle at low speeds, usually while turning.

A test-drive may not duplicate the noise. If you have a vehicle that reportedly has this symptom, do the repair procedure.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The bump stop contacts the top of the front damper body, or the damper shaft self-locking nut has low torque.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Apply Shin-Etsu grease around the top of both front dampers. Retorque both front damper shaft self-locking nuts (2011 models only).

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Shin-Etsu Grease (one tube repairs about 40 vehicles):

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
The procedure used to torque the self-locking nuts is to be used only on the 2011 models.

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift until the front wheels are off the ground, and the front dampers are fully extended.

2. Lift up one of the front damper dust covers to expose the damper body.

3. Apply a small amount (about 0.5 gram, or about 1/2 the size of a dime), of Shin-Etsu grease all around the top of the damper body.

NOTE:
Do not get grease on the damper shaft.

4. Reinstall the damper dust cover.

5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the other front damper.

6. Lower the vehicle, and open the hood.

NOTE:
Steps 6 through 15 apply only to 2011 vehicles.

7. Remove the cowl top wiper covers.

8. Remove the windshield wiper arms.

9. Detach the clips securing the cowl cover.

10. Release the hooks of the cowl cover by pulling the cowl cover forward. Pull out the cowl cover from between the front fender and the windshield side trim.

11. Retorque both damper self-locking nuts.

12. Push in the cowl cover between the front fender and the windshield side trim. Reconnect the hooks of the cowl cover by pushing the cowl cover backward.

13. Reinstall the clips securing the cowl cover.

14. Reinstall the windshield wiper arms and nuts.

15. Reinstall the cowl top wiper covers.
