Transfer Case - Gear Noise In Passenger Compartment: Overview

Geartrain Sound Entering Passenger Compartment

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves the replacement of the transfer case range lever torque shaft and the installation of a sound deadener mastic patch to the inside floor pan.

MODELS:

2000 - 2001 (XJ) Cherokee

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 4.0L GASOLINE OR A 2.5L DIESEL ENGINE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customer may experience a geartrain sound in the passenger compartment.

The sound may be most noticeable when the engine is at idle. The geartrain sound may appear to be coming from the center console area.

Some of the geartrain sound enters the passenger compartment by way of the transfer case range lever linkage. A revised torque shaft has been released to improve the isolation of this source of geartrain sound.

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURES:

If the customer experiences the above condition, perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE:
THIS REPAIR WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF GEARTRAIN SOUND.
