Tapping or Knocking Sound at B or C Pillar

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves lubricating the door latch catch plate striker contact surfaces.

MODELS:

2007 - 2008 (JK) Wrangler

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built prior to June 28, 2008

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience a knocking sound coming from the B pillar area (two door models) or B and / or C pillar area (four door models) while driving over bumps or rough terrain. The sound may resemble someone tapping on the B or C pillar. The sound may be due to the interaction between the latch catch plate and striker.

DIAGNOSIS:
If the vehicle operator describes the Symptom/Condition and / or the Knock Sound can be duplicated, perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Open the door.





2. With the door open, use your finger and rotate the door catch plate to the secondary position (one detent) to expose the area that receives the striker.

3. Using a small brush (flux brush) apply an even coating of Krytox Grease pn 05019060AA to the circular area of the catch plate striker contact surfaces (area that holds striker). Evenly coat the entire area of the catch plate striker contact surfaces.

NOTE:
All areas of the latch plate that contact the striker must be lubricated.

4. Using the door handle, open the door latch.

5. Close and open the door 3 or 4 times to distribute the grease.

6. Examine door striker and underside of latch catch to ensure complete lubricant coverage.

7. Wipe any excess grease from the striker.

8. Repeat the lubrication process on the other door(s).
