Warning
•  Do not use the vehicle-equipped jack to jack up the vehicle for brake disc/brake drum inspection. The jack may slip during servicing and cause an accident. Always use a lift or a garage jack to jack up the vehicle and use a rigid rack when performing brake disc/brake drum inspection.
Caution
•  Do not operate the brake pedal with the caliper/drum removed. The caliper/wheel cylinder may be damaged if the brake pedal is operated with the caliper/drum removed.
•  Do not operate the parking brake lever with the brake drum removed. The parts securing the parking brake cable may be damaged if the parking brake lever is operated while the brake drum is removed.

Required tools

•  Micrometer
•  Torque wrench
•  Handle
•  Socket (21 mm)
•  Phillips screwdriver

•  If the brake disc thickness is the usable minimum or less, the brake disc has to be replaced with a new one. Consult a Mazda Dealer for replacement.
Brake disc usable minimum thickness
4x2 (except high clearance model): 22.0 mm {0.87 in}
4x2 (high clearance model), 4x4: 26.0 mm {1.03 in}
Standard brake disc thickness (New part)
4x2 (except high clearance model): 24.0 mm {0.95 in}
4x2 (high clearance model), 4x4: 28.0 mm {1.10 in}

4.  Install the front tire and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque
89—117N·m {9.1—11 kgf·m, 66—86 ft·lbf}

5.  After installation, pump the brake pedal a few times and verify that the brakes do not drag.

Rear Brake Drum Inspection

1.  Remove the rear tire.

2.  Remove the screws, then remove the brake drum from the vehicle.

Brake drum maximum wear
4x2 (except high clearance model): 271.5 mm {10.68 in}
4x2 (high clearance model), 4x4: 296.5 mm {11.67 in}
Standard brake drum thickness (New part)

6.  Install the rear tire and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque
89—117 N·m {9.1—11 kgf·m, 66—86 ft·lbf}

7.  After installation, pump the brake pedal a few times and inspect the following:

•  Parking brake lever stroke
•  Brake drag
