CHAIN ADJUSTER CONSTRUCTION/OPERATION [G6]

id011095112600

Construction

•  The self-adjusting chain adjuster mounted in the cylinder block uses both engine oil pressure and spring pressure to automatically maintain timing chain tension.

Operation

•  When the timing chain is installed and there is no oil pressure in the adjuster, the plunger spring maintains chain tension.
•  Once the engine has started, oil pressure builds in the adjuster, and oil pressure and the spring tensioner combine to push the chain adjuster sleeve outward. If there is excessive slack in the chain, the ratchet pawl skips to the next notch(es).
•  When the engine is stopped and the oil pressure drops, the adjuster sleeve is prevented from being pushed back into the chain adjuster by the ratchet pawl.
