Warning
•  Fuel vapor is hazardous. It can easily ignite, causing serious injury and damage. Always keep sparks and flames away from fuel.
•  When the engine and the oil are hot, they can badly burn. Turn off the engine and wait until they are cool.

1.  Verify that the battery is fully charged. Recharge it if necessary. (See BATTERY INSPECTION [WLT-1, WLT-2, WL-3, WL-C, WE-C].)

2.  Warm up the engine to the normal operating temperature.

3.  Stop the engine and allow it to cool down for about 10 minutes.

4.  Remove the engine cover.

5.  Disconnect the fuel injector connector.

Warning
•  If the glow plug wiring harness connector is connected, the glow plug wiring harness and the engine component can come into contact and cause a short when the engine switch is turned to the ON position. Disconnect the glow plug wiring harness connector before turning the engine switch to the ON position.

6.  Remove the glow plug cord installation bolts and position the glow plug cord out of the way.

7.  Remove all the glow plugs. (See GLOW PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [WL-C, WE-C].)

8.  Install the SSTs into the glow plug hole.

9.  Crank the engine and note the maximum gauge reading.

10.  Check each cylinder as above.

Compression (kPa {kgf/cm2, psi}[rpm])
Standard: 2,942 {30, 427}[200]
Minimum: 2,648 {27, 384}[200]

11.  If the compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour a small amount of clean engine oil into the cylinder and recheck the compression.

(1)  If the compression increases, the piston, the piston rings, or cylinder wall may be worn and overhaul is required.
(2)  If the compression stays low, a valve may be stuck or improperly seated and overhaul is required.
(3)  If the compression in adjacent cylinders stays low, the cylinder head gasket may be damaged or the cylinder head distorted and overhaul is required.

12.  Remove the SSTs.

13.  Install the glow plug. (See GLOW PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [WL-C, WE-C].)

14.  Install the glow plug cord. (See GLOW PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [WL-C, WE-C].)

15.  Reconnect the fuel injector connector.

16.  Install the engine cover.
