EXHAUST SHUTTER SOLENOID VALVE INSPECTION (European (L.H.D.) specs.) [WL-C, WE-C]

Exhaust Shutter Valve Control Operation Inspection

Note
•  The shutter valve does not operate when the intake air temperature of MAF sensor is approx. 13 °C {55 °F} or more.

1.  Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.

2.  Using the M-MDS, monitor the following:

•  Engine speed (PID: RPM)
•  Engine coolant temperature (PID: ECT)
•  Intake air temperature (PID: IAT)

3.  With the engine coolant temperature at less than 77 °C {171 °F}, verify that the exhaust shutter valve opens/closes under the following conditions.

1,370 or less
close
1,470 or more
open

4.  With the engine coolant temperature at 80 °C {176 °F} or more, verify whether the exhaust shutter valve opens or not.

•  If not within the specification, inspect the following:
―  Exhaust shutter solenoid valve
―  Harness and connectors for open or short (Main relay—exhaust shutter solenoid valve—PCM)
―  Vacuum hose for looseness or damage (Intake manifold—exhaust shutter solenoid valve—exhaust shutter valve)
―  Exhaust shutter valve


Airflow Inspection

1.  Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2.  Remove the exhaust shutter solenoid valve.

3.  Inspect airflow between the ports under the following conditions.

•  If as specified, carry out the “Circuit Open/Short Inspection”.
•  If not as specified, replace the exhaust shutter solenoid valve.

Circuit Open/Short Inspection

1.  Inspect for an open or short circuit in the following wiring harnesses.

•  If there is an open or short circuit, repair or replace wiring harnesses.


Open circuit

•  Power circuit (exhaust shutter solenoid valve terminal B and main relay terminal D)
•  Ground circuit (exhaust shutter solenoid valve terminal A and PCM terminal 208)


Short circuit

•  Exhaust shutter solenoid valve terminal B and engine switch to ground
