ENGINE TUNE-UP [WL-3]

id0110b5800600

Engine Tune-up Preparation

1.  Start the engine and warm up completely.

2.  Verify that the gear is in neutral position.

3.  Verify that the accelerator pedal is released.

4.  Turn off the A/C switch. (if equipped)

5.  Turn off all electrical loads.

6.  Verify that no DTC is present.

Idle Speed Inspection

Using M-MDS

1.  Perform “Engine Tune-up Preparation”. (See Engine Tune-up Preparation.)

2.  Connect the M-MDS to the DLC.

dbg110awbr50

Note
•  Idle speed is not adjustable.
•  Idle speed verification requires M-MDS.

3.  Verify that the idling speed (M-MDS: RPM PID) is within the specification using the M-MDS function.

Specification
No load: 695—745 rpm
A/C ON: 725—775 rpm
•  If not as specified, inspect the following parts.
―  APP sensor
―  ECT sensor
―  CKP sensor
―  Fuel pump speed sensor
•  If the parts are normal, replace the PCM.

Not using M-MDS

Caution
•  Connecting to the wrong DLC terminal may cause a malfunction. Carefully connect only to the specified terminal.

1.  Perform “Engine Tune-up Preparation”. (See Engine Tune-up Preparation.)

2.  Connect a tachometer to the DLC terminal IG–.

dbg110awb023

3.  Turn on the test mode.

(1)  Connect DLC terminal TEN to the body ground using a jumper wire.
Note
•  Idle speed is not adjustable.

4.  Verify that the idle speed is within the specification.

Specification
No load: 695—745 rpm
A/C ON: 725—775 rpm
•  If not as specified, inspect the following parts.
―  APP sensor
―  ECT sensor
―  CKP sensor
―  Fuel pump speed sensor
•  If the parts are normal, replace the PCM.

Injection Timing Adjustment

Caution
•  Excessive tension on the timing belt may cause damage to the timing belt and camshaft. If the bolt and nuts of the fuel injection pump are temporarily loosened, re-tension the timing belt.

1.  Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the crankshaft pulley TDC mark (yellow mark) with the indicator pin.

dbg110aebr81

2.  Remove the hydraulic head plug of the fuel injection pump.

3.  Insert the SST into the hydraulic head plug hole and install it so that the dial gauge indicates approx. 2 mm {0.08 in}.

dbg110aebr80

4.  Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise and find the place where the dial gauge needle does not move near approx. 30°BTDC. (SST installation bolt hole of crankshaft pulley and indicator pin align at approx. 30°BTDC)

dbg110aebr78

5.  Set the dial gauge to 0 mm {0 in}.

6.  Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and read the dial gauge when the 10°ATDC mark (white mark) of the crankshaft pulley and the indicator pin align.

dbg110aebr79

7.  If it is not within the specification, loosen the bolts and nuts of the fuel injection pump, and adjust them to the specification.

Fuel injection pump plunger adjustment value
0.95—1.05 mm {0.038—0.041 in}

8.  Tighten the fuel injection pump in the order shown in the figure.

dbg110aebr77

9.  Remove the SST and install the hydraulic head plug through a new gasket.

10.  Re-tension the timing belt. (See TIMING BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [WL-3].)
