A slight oil operating sound is audible in the power steering system. The operating sound is particularly audible when the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is stopped. Since this operating sound does not directly affect the steering wheel functions, do not replace the relief valve unless this operating sound is extremely loud.
If the steering force is significantly heavy or if there are abnormal noises, the power steering unit or the power steering oil pump may be defective. However, the same malfunction occurs if there is air in the power steering fluid. In this case, first inspect the screws in the piping system for looseness and the hoses in this system for any breakage.
If the malfunction occurs even if no air is in the power steering fluid, inspect and repair the power steering oil pump or power steering unit.
If there are hissing sounds, they are being caused by the power steering unit. If there are growling or rattling sounds, they are being caused by the power steering oil pump.
