1. Steering column inspection

1) Inspect the steering column capsule for the following.

  • Tightly fitting of the capsule to all brackets
  • Any slack when pushed or pulled by hand
  • No gap between the capsule and the bracket

Legend

  1. There should be no gap.

2) Inspect the universal joint for resistance when rotating it.

There are universal joints in the following parts.

  • Second steering shaft (Between the steering column and the second steering shaft)
  • Lower second steering shaft (Between the lower second steering shaft and the power steering unit)

Note

  • When resistance is felt, replace the second steering shaft or lower second steering shaft.

3) Inspect the tilt mechanism for the following.

  • Smooth movement of the tilt mechanism
  • When the tilt mechanism is locked, the steering column should be securely latched even if the steering wheel is pushed up and down.

Caution

  • Do not release the tilt lever lock with the steering column removed.
