Abnormal noise and vibration from rear axle

1. Abnormal noise and vibration from rear axle diagnostics

1. Abnormal sound from the rear axle

1) Abnormal noise at the vehicle runtime

Insufficient differential oil

  • Add differential oil.

Incorrect or defective differential oil

  • Replace the differential oil.

Excessive or insufficient backlash between the drive pinion and ring gear

  • Adjust the backlash.

Loose drive pinion bearing

  • Adjust the drive pinion bearing preload.

Worn drive pinion bearing

  • Replace the drive pinion bearing.

Loose differential side bearing

  • Adjust the differential side bearing preload.

Worn differential side bearing

  • Replace the differential side bearing.

Damaged drive pinion or ring gear

  • Replace the drive pinion and ring gear as a set.

Excessive ring gear surface runout

  • Replace the drive pinion and ring gear as a set.

Worn drive pinion and ring gear

  • Replace the drive pinion and ring gear as a set.

2) Abnormal noise during inertia travel of the vehicle

Insufficient backlash of the drive pinion and ring gear

  • Adjust the backlash.

Damaged drive pinion gear or ring gear

  • Replace the ring gear and drive pinion gear as a set.

3) Intermittent noise

Excessive play of the rear axle shaft spline

  • Replace the rear axle shaft.

Distorted ring gear

  • Replace the drive pinion and ring gear as a set.

Loose differential cage bolt

  • Tighten the differential cage bolt.

Foreign material in the axle case

  • Remove any foreign material.

4) Abnormal sound during vehicle turning

Worn rear axle shaft spline

  • Replace the rear axle shaft.

Worn side gear

  • Replace the side gear.

Worn differential cage pinion gear

  • Replace the pinion gear of the differential cage.

Worn differential cage cross pin

  • Replace the cross pin of the differential cage.

5) Abnormal noise is heard when normal.

Bent rear axle shaft

  • Replace the rear axle shaft.

Worn drive pinion gear and ring gear

  • Replace the drive pinion and ring gear as a set.

Worn drive pinion bearing or side bearing

  • Replace the drive pinion bearing or side bearing.

2. Vibration from the rear axle

Worn rear hub bearing

  • Replace the rear hub bearing.

Bent rear axle shaft

  • Replace the rear axle shaft.
