Purpose, Function

• A fan control module has been adopted which enables stepless control of the fan rotation speed to save energy and reduce vibration and noise from the fan.

• The fan control module has a power supply function to operate the cooling fan motor and the following protection functions.

1. Excess voltage protection

― If the voltage to the cooling fan motor exceeds a certain value, the excess-voltage protection function of the fan control module operates, and the cooling fan motor is stopped.

2. Excess current protection

― If the electrical current to the cooling fan motor exceeds a certain value, the excess-current protection function of the fan control module operates, and the current value to the cooling fan motor is controlled at less than a specified value.

3. Overheating protection

― If the internal temperature of the fan control module exceeds a certain temperature, the overheating protection function operates and the cooling fan motor is stopped.

4. The fan control module returns to the normal condition when the value for each protection function is a certain value or less.

Construction

• The fan control module has been integrated with the cooling fan motor.

Operation

1. Electric current flows (1) to the cooling fan relay coil based on the signals from the PCM.

2. When electric current flows to the coil, the contact point is attracted by the generated electromagnetic power and switches on (2).

3. When the contact point switches on, battery power is supplied (3) to the fan control module.

4. The fan control module drives the cooling fan motor (5) based on the cooling fan control signal (4) sent from the PCM.

5. Depending on the control signal sent from the PCM, the cooling fan may remain operational for several seconds or minutes after the ignition is switched off. (See ELECTRICAL FAN CONTROL [SKYACTIV-G 2.5T].)
