DESCRIPTION	• Starter does not work.
POSSIBLE CAUSE	• Open starter circuit between the ignition switch and starter • Starter interlock switch malfunction (with advanced keyless entry and push button start system) • Starter malfunction • Seized/hydrolocked engine, flywheel • Immobilizer system (PATS) and/or circuit malfunction • Immobilizer system operating properly (engine key is not registered) • Advanced keyless entry and start system malfunction • Low or dead battery • Charging system malfunction

DESCRIPTION

• Starter does not work.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

• Open starter circuit between the ignition switch and starter

• Starter interlock switch malfunction (with advanced keyless entry and push button start system)

• Starter malfunction

• Seized/hydrolocked engine, flywheel

• Immobilizer system (PATS) and/or circuit malfunction

• Immobilizer system operating properly (engine key is not registered)

• Advanced keyless entry and start system malfunction

• Low or dead battery

• Charging system malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP	INSPECTION	RESULTS	ACTION
1	Note • The following test should be performed on the advanced keyless entry system. If not equipped, go to the next step. Start the engine using the mechanical ignition key. Does the engine start?	Yes	Inspect advanced keyless entry system and repair or replace according to inspection result. (See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART [KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM].)
1		No	Go to the next step.
2	Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. Do the following conditions appear? • Engine is not completely started. • DTC P1260:00 is displayed.	Yes	Both conditions appear: Go to Step 5.
2		No	Either or other condition appears: Go to the next step.
3	Is the coil antenna connector securely connected to the coil antenna?	Yes	Go to the next step.
3		No	Connect the coil antenna connector securely. Return to Step 2.
4	Does the security light illuminate?	Yes	Go to the next step.
4	Does the security light illuminate?	No	Inspect instrument cluster and wiring harness. (See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INSPECTION.)
5	Connect the M-MDS to DLC-2. Perform the immobilizer system DTC inspection. (See DTC INSPECTION [IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM (KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM)].) (See DTC INSPECTION [IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM (ADVANCED KEYLESS ENTRY AND START SYSTEM)].) Are any DTCs present?	Yes	Go to the appropriate DTC inspection. (See DTC TABLE [IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM (KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM)].) (See DTC TABLE [IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM (ADVANCED KEYLESS ENTRY AND START SYSTEM)].)
5		No	Go to Step 8. (with advanced keyless entry and start system) Go to the next step. (without advanced keyless entry and start system)
6	Inspect the following wiring harnesses and connectors. • Between coil antenna terminal A and instrument cluster terminal 2Q • Between coil antenna terminal B and instrument cluster terminal 2S Is there any malfunction (open or short circuit, terminal corrosion, etc.)?	Yes	Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
6		No	Go to the next step.
7	Inspect the following wiring harnesses and connectors. • Between PCM terminal 2AD and instrument cluster terminal 2R • Between PCM terminal 2AH and instrument cluster terminal 2T Is there any malfunction (open or short circuit, terminal corrosion, etc.)?	Yes	Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
7		No	Go to Step 9.
8	Inspect the following wiring harnesses and connectors. Between keyless control module terminal 3V and coil antenna A Between keyless control module terminal 3U and coil antenna B Between keyless control module terminal 3X and PCM terminal 2AD Between keyless control module terminal 3W and PCM terminal 2AH Is there any malfunction (open or short circuit, terminal corrosion, etc.)?	Yes	Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
8		No	Go to the next step.
9	Is there continuity between PCM terminal 1CB and the starter relay?	Yes	Go to the next step.
9		No	Repair or replace the wiring harness.
10	Inspect the following: • Battery connection • Battery condition • Fuses Are all items normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
10		No	Service if necessary. Repeat Step 10.
11	Is a clicking sound heard from starter when the switch the ignition ON?	Yes	Go to Step 13.
11		No	Go to the next step.
12	Inspect the starter relay. Is the starter relay normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
12	Inspect the starter relay. Is the starter relay normal?	No	Replace the starter relay.
13	Inspect starting system. Is starting system normal?	Yes	Inspect for the seized/hydrolocked engine, flywheel. (See FLYWHEEL INSPECTION [MZR-CD 2.2].)
13	Inspect starting system. Is starting system normal?	No	Repair or replace components if necessary.
14	Do any other electrical accessories work?	Yes	Go to the next step.
14	Do any other electrical accessories work?	No	Inspect charging system.
15	Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. Switch the ignition to ON. Retrieve any DTCs. Are any DTCs displayed?	Yes	DTC is displayed: Go to the appropriate DTC test. (See DTC TABLE [MZR-CD 2.2].) Communication error message is displayed: Inspect the following: • Open circuit between main relay and PCM terminal 2C or 2F • Open circuit main relay and PCM terminal 2I • Main relay stuck open • Open or poor ground circuit (PCM terminal 2B, 2E, 2A or 2D) • Poor connection to vehicle body ground
15		No	No DTC is displayed: Inspect the following: • START circuit in ignition switch • Open circuit between ignition switch and starter
16	Verify test results. • If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms. (See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTIC INDEX [MZR-CD 2.2].) • If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Information and perform repair or diagnosis. ― If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting completed. ― If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, reprogram the PCM if later calibration is available.
