1

Does not latch release with liftgate outer handle switch

DESCRIPTION
•  The liftgate is not released latch when using the liftgate outer handle switch.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Malfunction in liftgate outer handle switch related part
―  Liftgate outer handle switch malfunction
―  Open or short to ground circuit in wiring harness between liftgate outer handle switch and PLG control module
―  PLG fuse melt or damaged
•  Malfunction in closer motor related part
―  Closer motor malfunction
―  Open circuit in wiring harness between closer motor and PLG control module
•  PLG control module can not recognize latch release possible condition
―  Door lock state signal incorrect
―  BCM malfunction
•  CAN communication error (Symptom appears while the ignition switch is ON position only.)
―  Improper vehicle speed signal from PCM
―  Improper transaxle range signal from TCM
•  PLG control module malfunction

When performing an asterisked (*) troubleshooting inspection, slightly shake the wiring harness and connectors while performing the inspection to discover whether poor contact points are the cause of any intermittent malfunctions. If there is a problem, verify that the connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses are connected correctly and undamaged.

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
INSPECT IF MALFUNCTION IS IN CAN COMMUNICATION SIGNAL OR ELSEWHERE
•  Is the symptom appears while the ignition switch is ON position only?
Yes
Go to Step 7.
No
Go to the next step.
2
INSPECT LIFTGATE OUTER HANDLE SWITCH
•  Inspect the liftgate outer handle switch.
•  Is the liftgate outer handle switch normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the liftgate outer handle.
Note
•  The liftgate outer handle switch is integrated with the liftgate outer handle.
3*
INSPECT WIRING HARNESS BETWEEN PLG CONTROL MODULE AND LIFTGATE OUTER HANDLE SWITCH
•  Turn the ignition switch to LOCK position.
•  Disconnect the liftgate outer handle switch and PLG control module connectors.
•   Inspect for open or short to ground circuit for following:
―  Between liftgate outer handle switch terminal A and PLG control module terminal 3O
―  Between liftgate outer handle switch terminal B and PLG control module terminal 3R
•  Is open or short for ground circuit detected?
Yes
Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
Replace the PLG fuse if necessary.
No
Go to the next step.
4
INSPECT CLOSER MOTOR
•  Inspect the closer motor.
•   Is the liftgate latch and lock actuator normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the closer motor.
5*
INSPECT WIRING HARNESS BETWEEN PLG CONTROL MODULE AND CLOSER MOTOR
•  Turn the ignition switch to LOCK position.
•  Disconnect the closer motor and PLG control module connectors.
•  Inspect for open or short to ground circuit for following:
―  Between closer motor terminal A and PLG control module terminal 1A
―  Between closer motor terminal B and PLG control module terminal 1B
•   Is open circuit detected?
Yes
Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
No
Go to the next step.
6
INSPECT POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM
•   Inspect the power door lock system operation.
•  Does the power door lock operate properly?
Yes
Replace the PLG control module.
No
Replace the BCM.
7
INSPECT VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL
•  Access PCM PID VSS using M-MDS.
•  Is the PID monitoring value normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Inspect and repair for followings:
•  ABS wheel speed sensor
•  CAN communication (DSC/RSC HU/CM—PCM—PLG control module)
8
INSPECT IF MALFUNCTION IS IN TRANSAXLE RANGE SIGNAL OR ELSEWHERE
•  Access TCM PID TR using M-MDS.
•  Is the PID monitoring value normal?
Yes
Replace the PLG control module.
No
Inspect and repair for followings:
•  TR switch
•  CAN communication (TCM—PLG control module)
