Side Air Bag Module For Front Passenger

Purpose

•  When the vehicle receives an impact from a lateral collision, the side air bag module for front passenger operates (deploys) the built-in air bag to reduce the impact to the chest, abdomen, and waist part of the passenger on the side the collision occurred.

Function

•  When the vehicle receives an impact from a lateral collision, the side air bag module for front passenger operates (deploys) the air bag (door side) on the side the collision occurred based on the operation signal sent from the SAS control module.

Construction

•  The side air bag module for front passenger is located on the door side in the driver’s and front passenger’s seat backs.
•  The side air bag module consists of the inflator and air bag.
•  The inflator consists of an initiator, gas-generating agent, inner tube, orifice, seal tape, and a diffuser.

Operation

•  The side air bag module operates (deploys) the air bag by activating the internal inflator.
•  The inflator operates (deploys) in the following order:
1.  When an operation (deployment) signal is received from the SAS control module, the initiator ignites.
2.  The ignition of the initiator causes the combustion of gas-generating agent A which generates gas (1).
3.  The generated burnt gas causes the combustion of gas-generating agent B which generates gas (2).
4.  The generated burnt gas breaks through the seal tape (3), and is injected into the air bag (4) through the diffuser.

Far side air bag module

Purpose

•  When the vehicle receives an impact from a lateral collision, the far side air bag module operates (deploys) the built-in air bag to reduce the impact to the chest, abdomen, and waist part of the driver.

Function

•  When the vehicle receives an impact from a lateral collision, the far side air bag module operates (deploys) the air bag (console side) based on the operation signal sent from the SAS control module.

Construction

•  The far side air bag module is located on the console side in the driver’s front seat back.
•  The side air bag module consists of the inflator and air bag.
•  The inflator consists of an initiator, gas-generating agent, charged gas, and an orifice.

Operation

•  The side air bag module operates (deploys) the air bag by activating the internal inflator.
•  The inflator operates (deploys) in the following order:
1.  When an operation (deployment) signal is received from the SAS control module, the initiator built into the inflator ignites.
2.  The ignition of the initiator causes the ignition of the gas-generating agent. The section of the wall from which the air bag deploys is broken by this impact wave.
3.  The charged gas and the gas generated by the gas-generating agent mix and pass through the orifice.
4.  The combined gas, which passed though the orifice, is sprayed into the air bag through the diffuser (diffusion devise).

Side Air Bag Module For Rear Passenger

Purpose

•  When the vehicle receives an impact from a lateral collision, the side air bag module for rear passenger operates (deploys) the built-in air bag to reduce the impact to the chest, abdomen, and waist part of the passenger on the side the collision occurred.

Function

•  When the vehicle receives an impact from a lateral collision, the side air bag module for rear passenger operates (deploys) the air bag (door side) on the side the collision occurred based on the operation signal sent from the SAS control module.

Construction

•  The side air bag module for rear passenger is located inside the tire house trim.
