REAR SIDE RADAR SENSOR
id151100006200
Purpose
• The following systems control based on the target information from the rear side radar sensor.
-
Function
Object detection function
-
• The rear side radar sensor detects objects at the rear side of the vehicle using radar which detects vehicles at wide angles. The detection range for each radar is as follows.
-
Note
-
• There are limitations to the detection performance of the rear side radar sensor.
-
― Rear bumper is deformed near rear side radar sensor
― Ice, snow, or dirt is adhering near rear side radar sensor
― Vehicle is driven in rain, snow, or fog
• The rear side radar sensor may not detect or have difficulty in detecting the following objects.
-
― Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, shopping carts, or stationary objects on the road or roadside
― Vehicles with shapes that may not reflect radar (such as unloaded trailers with low vehicle heights, and sports cars)
• When towing a trailer or if an accessory is equipped to the rear part of the vehicle such as a bicycle carrier, disable the system. The system may not operate normally because the radio waves of the radar may be obstructed.
• The rear side radar sensor calculates the detected object position and relative speed based on the emitted and reflected radio waves.
Automatic configuration function
-
• When the main power is switched ON (READY off or on) for the first time after the rear side radar sensor has been replaced, the rear side radar sensor reads the vehicle specification information sent via CAN communication from the body control module (BCM) and it performs automatic configuration.
Radar emission angle correction function
-
• The rear side radar sensor corrects deviations in the radar emission angles, caused by installation tolerances after related part replacement, by implementing the radar aiming procedure. For the radar aiming implementation timing and procedure, refer to [BLIND SPOT MONITORING (BSM) AIMING] in the workshop manual.
Construction
• One rear side radar sensor each is located on the left and right of the bracket inside the rear bumper.
• Weight reduction has been achieved using hard plastic for the rear side radar sensor cover.
• The rear side radar sensor has 1 integrated transmitter which emits 24 GHz radio waves and several integrated receivers which receive the reflected radio waves.
Operation
Object detection
-
• The rear side radar sensor emits 24 GHz radio waves from the transmitter integrated in the module, and receives the reflected radar waves using several receivers integrated in the module.
The rear side radar sensor calculates the distance between the object and vehicle based on the time required to receive the reflected radio waves that were emitted, and it calculates the angle (horizontal angle) of the object with the vehicle based on the phase difference between the arriving reflected radio waves received by several receivers.
