STEERING WHEEL SIDE COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

Warning
•  Handling the driver-side air bag module improperly can accidentally operate (deploy) the air bag module, which may seriously injure you. Note
•  When removing the driver-side air bag module, it is necessary to rotate the steering wheel. If the ignition has been switched off with the driver's door closed, the steering wheel will be locked. Perform the procedure from Steps 1-3 so that the steering wheel will not be locked.

1.  Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).

2.  Open the driver's door.

3.  Switch the ignition off.

4.  Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION.)

5.  Remove the driver-side air bag module. (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) 6.  Remove the steering wheel. (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

7.  Affix protective tape to the gaps between the steering wheel and cover as shown in the figure.

8.  Using a tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver, press the cover tabs in the direction of the arrows shown in the figure to detach the cover tabs from the steering wheel.

9.  Insert the fastener remover into the clearance between the steering wheel and cover as shown in the figure.

10.  Move the fastener remover in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and detach the cover tab from the steering wheel.

11.  Remove the cover while detaching the pins from the steering wheel.

12.  Warm up the shaded area shown in the figure and soften the hard plastic area of the steering wheel using a heat gun.

13.  While pressing the tab of the steering wheel side cover in the direction of arrow (1) shown in the figure, press the steering wheel side cover in the direction of arrow (2) to detach the tab of the steering wheel side cover from the steering wheel.

14.  Warm up the shaded area shown in the figure and soften the hard plastic area of the steering wheel using a heat gun.

15.  Insert a fastener remover into the position shown in the figure.

16.  Move the fastener remover straight in the direction shown in the figure and remove the tabs A and B of the steering wheel side cover from the steering wheel.

Caution
•  When removing the pin of the steering wheel side cover, pull them out straight. If the fastener remover is moved at an angle, the pin could be damaged.
Note
•  Because the pin of the steering wheel side cover is installed to the hard plastic area of the steering wheel, the engagement is strong.

17.  Remove the steering wheel side cover while detaching the pin of the steering wheel side cover.

18.  Install in the reverse order of removal.
