Glow System

Outline

•  The SKYACTIV-D 1.8 has a comparatively low compression temperature because of its low compression. The glow system raises the compression temperature by preheating the inside of the combustion chamber to assure engine startability at low temperatures.
•  The glow plugs are controlled by the glow control module.

Reference

Glow control module
Glow plug
(See Glow Plug.)

Glow Control Module

Purpose, function

•  The glow control module controls the voltage applied to the glow plugs for improved startability during cold temperatures.
•  The glow control module controls the voltage based on the control signal from the PCM.

Construction

•  The glow control module is located underneath the front combination light (LH).

Operation

•  Controls the voltage applied to the glow plugs based on the control signal from the PCM. In addition, the on-board diagnostic function is equipped and if there is a malfunction in the glow control module, a diagnostic signal is sent to the PCM. The PCM stores a DTC if necessary according to the received diagnostic signal.

Glow Plug

Purpose, function

•  The glow plug raises the compression temperature by preheating the inside of the combustion chamber.

Construction

•  The glow plugs are located on the cylinder heads.
