Structure

•  The exhaust gas purification system consists of the following parts:

Catalytic Converter (TWC)

Purpose, function

•  The catalytic converter purifies contaminants in the exhaust gas by utilizing the chemical reactions of the three-way catalytic converter.

Construction

•  The catalytic converter is located behind the engine.

Operation

•  Contaminants in the exhaust gas (HC, CO, NOx) are purified by oxidization and deoxidization while they are passing through the catalytic converter.

―  Oxidization process

•  Noxious hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) are bound with oxygen and converted to non-noxious carbon dioxide and water.

O₂+HC+CO→CO₂+H₂O

―  Deoxidization process

•  Noxious nitrogen oxide (NOx) is converted to non-noxious nitrogen and oxygen. A part of the oxygen generated in this process is used in the oxidization process.

Catalytic Converter (Gasoline Particulate Filter)

Purpose, function

•  The Gasoline particulate filter collects particulate matter (PM) in the exhaust gas and eliminates the PM from the exhaust gas.Gasoline particulate filter is a cordierite honey-comb type filter. The filter ends are blocked alternately and small holes are arranged on the wall inside the filter, PM is collected, and the accumulated PM is burnt and eliminated while the vehicle is driven.

Construction

•  The gasoline particulate filter is integrated inside the catalytic converter (gasoline particulate filter).

Operation

•  Gasoline particulate filter is a cordierite honey-comb type filter. The filter ends are blocked alternately and small holes are arranged on the wall inside the filter, PM is collected, and the accumulated PM is burnt and eliminated while the vehicle is driven.
