Structure

•  The exhaust gas purification system consists of the following parts:

Part name

Reference

Catalytic converter
Diesel particulate filter
Ammonia slip catalyst

Catalytic Converter

Purpose, function

•  The catalytic converter (oxidation catalyst/NOx strage catalyst) utilizes chemical reactions to purify contaminants in the exhaust gas.

Construction

•  The catalytic converter is located behind the engine.

Operation

•  The catalytic converter (oxidation catalyst) converts the noxious carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon in the exhaust gas to non-noxious carbon dioxide and water.
Oxidization process
O2+ HC + CO = CO2+ H2O
•  The catalytic converter (NOx storage catalyst) adsorbs the NOx exhausted from the engine into the NSC.
•  When NSC absorbs NOx, ammonia is generated. The ammonia slip catalyst absorbs the ammonia generated in the NSC and prevents the release of ammonia into the atmosphere.
•  For details on the catalytic converter (oxidation catalyst/NOx strage catalyst), refer to the DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER/NSC CONTROL. (See Diesel Particulate Filter.) (See ENGINE OIL MAINTENANCE MONITOR [SKYACTIV-D 1.8].)

Diesel Particulate Filter

Purpose, function

•  The diesel particulate filter collects and removes particulate matter (PM) in the exhaust gas.

Construction

•  The DPF is integrated inside the catalytic converter (DPF).

Operation

•  Diesel particulate filter is a silicon carbide honey-comb type filter. The filter ends are blocked in sequence and small holes on the wall inside the filter collect PM, and the collected PM is burned and eliminated. (See DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER REGENERATION CONTROL [SKYACTIV-D 1.8].)
