Outline

•  Particulate matter (PM) in the gasoline particulate filter is eliminated during deceleration fuel-cut.
•  If the amount of accumulated PM exceeds the specified value, the PCM turns on the gasoline particulate filter warning indication/warning light and performs automatic gasoline particulate filter regeneration control to accelerate burning and elimination of PM.
•  If the amount of accumulated PM largely exceeds the specified value, the PCM flashes the gasoline particulate filter warning indication/warning light to notify the driver that automatic gasoline particulate filter regeneration control needs to be performed.

Operation

•  The PCM estimates the amount of PM accumulated in the gasoline particulate filter.
•  The amount of accumulated PM is calculated from the difference in the exhaust gas pressures and the PM emission amount.
Estimate by exhaust gas pressure
•  The amount of accumulated PM is estimated by comparing the exhaust gas pressures before and after the gasoline particulate filter based on the signal from the GPF pressure sensor.
•  The PM emission amount is calculated from the soot generation amount and the PM combustion amount.
Soot generation amount
•  The soot generation amount is estimated based on the engine speed, intake air amount, and fuel injection amount.
PM combustion amount
•  The PM combustion amount is estimated based on the engine speed, intake air amount, and fuel injection amount.
•  The PCM turns on/flashes the gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning light and check engine light according to the amount of accumulated PM to prompt gasoline particulate filter regeneration.

*1  :When the amount of accumulated PM becomes 1,600 mg or more, the gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning light turns on and the message is displayed on the MID/CMU. The gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning light turns off and the message disappears when the amount of accumulated PM becomes 100 mg or less.
*2  :When the amount of accumulated PM becomes 8,000 mg or more, the message is displayed on the multi-information display/connectivity master unit, and the gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning light flashes as well as the check engine light turns on. After these conditions occur, exhaust gas pressure restriction is started to protect the engine. The gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning light and the check engine light turn off and the message disappears when the amount of accumulated PM becomes 100 mg or less.
*3  :If the amount of accumulated PM reaches 15,200 mg or more, fuel cut is prohibited in addition to the exhaust gas pressure restriction to prevent the gasoline particulate filter from corrosion caused by soot burning.
*4  :The output restriction is performed to suppress PM accumulation causing gasoline particulate filter clogging and then increasing the exhaust gas pressure.
*5  :Deceleration fuel cut control may be inhibited to suppress heat generation due to gasoline particulate filter regeneration. The exhaust gas temperature which inhibits the deceleration fuel cut control changes according to the PM accumulation amount.

Gasoline particulate filter replacement

*1  :When the amount of accumulated PM becomes 4,800 mg or more, the gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning light turns on and the message is displayed on the MID/CMU. The gasoline particulate filter warning indication/gasoline particulate filter warning light turns off and the message disappears when the amount of accumulated PM becomes 100 mg or less.

Gasoline particulate filter regeneration control during normal driving

•  PM is burnt and eliminated if the exhaust gas temperature is 500 °C {932 °F} or more and with the presence of air. Since the gasoline engine exhaust gas temperature is higher than the diesel engine exhaust gas temperature, PM is burnt and eliminated at the same time as the deceleration fuel-cut control.

Automatic gasoline particulate filter regeneration control

•  If PM is accumulated, automatic gasoline particulate filter regeneration control is performed to burn and eliminate PM more vigorously. The PCM controls to burn and eliminate PM when the vehicle is driven for 30 min with all the following conditions met.
Automatic gasoline particulate filter regeneration control launch conditions
―  Engine completely warmed up (engine coolant temperature: 80°C {176 °F} or more)
―  Vehicle speed: After 20 km/h {12 mph} or more (exhaust gas temperature: 600 °C {1112 °F} or more)
―  PM accumulation amount: 15,200 mg or less*1
―  Travel time: Approx. 30 min*2
•  After automatic gasoline particulate filter regeneration control launches, it operates until the amount of accumulated PM is approx. 100 mg or less.

*1  :If the amount of accumulated PM reaches 15,200 mg or more, automatic gasoline particulate filter regeneration control is inhibited.
*2  :Travel time fluctuates depending on the driving condition. When the PM is burnt and eliminated, the gasoline particulate filter warning indication/warning light turns off.

Compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration control

•  Compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration can be performed using the Mazda Modular Diagnostic System (M-MDS).
•  When the compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration is performed, PM is combusted and eliminated by increasing the idle speed and delaying ignition timing with a lean A/F condition.
•  Operate the cooling fan with the active air shutter fully open during the compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration, and continue this operation 5 min after the compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration is completed to cool down the engine.
Compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration control implementation conditions*1
―  Engine completely warmed up (engine coolant temperature: 80°C {176 °F} or more)
―  Idling while vehicle is stopped (accelerator pedal or clutch pedal is not operated)
―  In neutral position (MTX) or P position (ATX)
―  DTCs other than P2463 are not stored

Compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration control (continue regeneration until amount of accumulated PM is 100 mg or less)

am3zzn00010319
Execution flow
1.  Fix the idle speed at 2,500 rpm to eliminate PM, and operate the cooling fan with the active air shutter fully open to cool down the engine.
2.  Continue the regeneration until the amount of accumulated PM is 100 mg or less.*2
3.  When the amount of accumulated PM is 100 mg or less, decrease the idle speed to a normal speed.
4.  To cool down the engine, maintain the cooling fan operation with the active air shutter fully open for 5 min.

*1  :Follow the instructions of the Mazda Modular Diagnostic System (M-MDS).
*2  :If the compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration implementation conditions are not met, finish the compulsory gasoline particulate filter regeneration control and reduce the engine speed.
