Outline
• An electronically controlled AWD system (i-ACTIV AWD) has been adopted which controls the distribution of the drive torque for the front and rear wheels automatically and optimally, for improved road handling ability, steering stability, and fuel economy.
• The PCM determines the driving conditions or road conditions by each input signal and the ESU controls the output current to the electronic control coupling (AWD solenoid) inside the rear differential for optimum distribution of the drive torque from the engine to the rear wheels.
• The load on the driver is reduced and operability is improved by the PCM automatically performing the AWD control.

Operation
Normal control:
-
• When accelerating from a stop and straight ahead, the transmission torque to the rear wheels is controlled optimally to assure sufficient acceleration performance for improved acceleration from a stop and acceleration performance.
• When the vehicle is driven continuously at a stable vehicle speed, the transmission torque to the rear wheels is suppressed and the PCM controls the torque from the all wheel drive to be close to the front wheel drive for improved fuel economy.
Tight cornering control:

• When the PCM determines that the vehicle is driven during tight cornering, the transmission torque to the rear wheels is reduced to avoid the tight corner braking phenomenon.
ABS integrated control:

• When a signal during ABS control is input from the electronically controlled brake unit, the transmission torque to the rear wheels is restricted so as not to affect the ABS control.
Other control:
-
• When the temperature of rear differential oil is the specification or more, or an excessively large difference in rotation speed between any of the front or rear tires continues such as extracting the vehicle when stuck, control is temporarily stopped to protect the AWD system. In addition, the AWD warning indication/AWD warning light flashes to notify the driver of a system malfunction at this time.
