ESS (EMERGENCY STOP SIGNAL SYSTEM) OPERATION

Note
•  The ESS (Emergency stop signal system) gives priority to the ESS operation over the turn switch operation.
•  The ESS (Emergency stop signal system) gives priority to the hazard warning switch over the ESS operation.
•  The ESS (Emergency stop signal system) system has two warning modes; the sudden deceleration hazard warning mode in which the hazard warning lights flash rapidly, and the emergency stop hazard warning mode in which the hazard warning lights flash normally.
•  The mode switches from the sudden deceleration hazard warning mode to the emergency stop hazard warning mode after certain conditions are met.

Sudden Deceleration Hazard Warning Mode

•  The sudden deceleration hazard warning mode operates while the vehicle speed is 50km/h {31 mph} or more.
•  When the sudden deceleration hazard warning mode operates the hazard warning lights flash at 3.0-4.0 Hz.

Operation

1.  If the brake pedal is depressed and the vehicle is decelerated while the vehicle speed is 50km/h {31 mph} or more, the ABS HU/CM (with ABS) or DSC HU/CM (with DSC) calculates the vehicle deceleration speed based on the speed signal of each wheel sent from the ABS wheel-speed sensor.

2.  If the calculated deceleration speed is the set value or more for the sudden deceleration hazard warning mode, the ABS HU/CM (with ABS) or DSC HU/CM (with DSC) sends a sudden deceleration hazard warning mode request signal to the BCM.

3.  The BCM controls the flashing of the hazard warning lights at 3.0-4.0 Hz based on the sudden deceleration hazard warning mode request signal sent from the ABS HU/CM (with ABS) or DSC HU/CM (with DSC). A turn indicator light illumination request signal is also sent to the instrument cluster.

4.  The ABS HU/CM (with ABS) or the DSC HU/CM (with DSC) stops the sudden deceleration warning mode request signal if the calculated deceleration speed is the sudden deceleration hazard warning mode set value or less.

Emergency Stop Hazard Warning Mode

•  When the emergency stop hazard warning mode operates, the hazard warning lights flash at 1.5 Hz.

Operation

1.  After the sudden deceleration hazard warning mode operates, the BCM controls the flashing of the hazard warning lights at 1.5 Hz (same as normal flashing) if the vehicle speed is 10km/h {6.2 mph} or less and the brake pedal switch is on (brake pedal depressed). A turn indicator light illumination request signal is also sent to the instrument cluster.

2.  If the brake switch is off (brake pedal not depressed), the BCM stops the operation of the emergency stop hazard warning mode.
